Kullu Valley, aptly called
‘Dev Bhoomi’-the abode of gods, is charming and beautiful as well. It spreads
two miles wide and almost seventy miles in length on either side of river
Beas. Enthralling Kullu valley combines the charms of lovely Devonshire Valley
with the steep silhouette of the Dolomites. The phenomenal aura of nature
here welcomes the visitors. Trees decked with luscious apples, apricots, plums,
pears and cherries; and giant rhododendrons, iris, butter-cups in their varied
colours are a feast for the eyes. People of this valley are lively, warm and
hospitable and are fond of music, songs, fairs and festivals.
Dussehra is the most important and world famous festival.
More than two hundred gods of neighbouring villages and hills are brought
down to Dhalpur Maidan (Kullu City) in their gaily caparisoned palaquins to
pay homage to local deity Raghunathji. Himachal culture is radiant in this
week long carnival enlivened with folk-dances, songs and trading of locally
manufactured products. Shawl manufacturing units are concentrated in Kullu
itself. Shawls, mufflers, caps, rugs and namdas produced here have been acclaimed
internationally.
